How the VIN car key lookup works

1

Find your VIN

Look at the lower corner of your windshield on the driver's side, the sticker inside the driver's door, or your registration and insurance card.

2

Type it in above

We pull your vehicle straight from the federal NHTSA database — year, make, model, engine, and trim — in about a second.

3

See your key & call

You'll see the likely key type, chip, and a starting price. Then call (716) 803-2934 and we'll cut and program it at your location.

Most people have no idea their car needs a chip key until they're stuck in a parking lot. Type your VIN in here and you'll know exactly what your car takes before you ever call me.

What your VIN tells us about your car key

Your 17-character VIN is your car's fingerprint. It locks in the model year, make, engine, and trim — and from those four things we can tell what kind of key your car runs and whether it needs programming. That's the whole point of car key programming in Buffalo, NY: matching the right blank, the right chip, and the right code to your exact vehicle. A 2003 sedan and a 2021 SUV from the same brand take completely different keys, and a basic key cutter at a hardware store can't tell the difference. We can, before we ever leave the shop.

Once we know your make and year, we know whether you're looking at a plain mechanical key, a transponder key with an immobilizer chip, a remote head key, a flip key, or a push-to-start smart key. That's also how we quote you straight. No bait price on the phone and a different number when we show up.

Car keys we cut and program in Buffalo

Defense Locksmith handles the full range of automotive keys, from old mechanical blanks to the encrypted smart keys on today's vehicles. Here's what we make and program:

  • Transponder key programming. Most cars built after 1996 carry a chip in the key that talks to the immobilizer. No chip, no start. Transponder key programming starts at $179.
  • Key fob programming & remote head keys. The combined key-and-remote on a lot of 2004–2015 vehicles. Cut and coded, starting at $219.
  • Flip keys. The folding remote keys common on European and newer domestic cars, starting at $239.
  • Smart key & push-to-start programming. Proximity fobs with a start button, standard on most 2018-and-newer vehicles. Programmed at your location, starting at $289.
  • Laser-cut (sidewinder) keys. The high-security blade you'll find on many luxury and late-model cars. We cut these on-site.
  • All keys lost. Lost every key to the car? We originate a brand-new key from scratch and program it to your immobilizer, starting at $249.
Dealers want your car towed in and gone for two days for a key. I program that same push-to-start key right in your driveway, and most of the time it's done the same day.

Car computer & immobilizer programming

This is where most locksmiths tap out. Cutting a blade is the easy part — the real work is the car computer programming and immobilizer programming that makes the key actually start the engine. Every modern car has an immobilizer that won't fire unless it reads the right encrypted code from the key. Programming that code takes the right diagnostic equipment, current software, and someone who's done it on your make before.

We handle transponder coding, key fob registration, push-to-start systems, and all-keys-lost jobs where the car has no working key left to learn from. On some vehicles that means reading and re-writing the immobilizer module directly. It's technical work, and it's the core of what Defense Locksmith does — not a side service.

European & high-end vehicle keys

Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Lexus, Porsche, Land Rover — these brands run some of the toughest immobilizer systems on the road, and that's exactly why a lot of locksmiths won't touch them. European car key programming is one of our specialties. If your VIN comes back as a European or high-end vehicle, there's a strong chance we've already cut and coded that exact key before.

Mercedes, BMW, Audi — those immobilizer systems send most locksmiths running. That's the work I actually enjoy. If your VIN comes back European, odds are I've already done that key.

Watch out for national "locksmith" dispatch scams

A lot of the locksmith listings you'll find online aren't local at all. They're national call centers that quote a low price, send an unvetted subcontractor, and then pad the bill once the work's done. It's a documented problem, and New York consumers report it every year. Defense Locksmith is a real Buffalo-area business with a local number, a named owner, and customers we see again.

If you ever feel pressured or misled by a locksmith, you can check licensing through the NY Department of State, Division of Licensing Services, or file a complaint with the NY Attorney General's Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau.

Car key programming FAQ

How much does car key programming cost in Buffalo, NY?

It depends on your vehicle. A transponder key starts at $179, a remote head key starts at $219, and a push-to-start smart key starts at $289. Run your VIN above for an estimate, and we confirm the exact price before any work begins.

Can you make a key if I lost all of mine?

Yes. All-keys-lost jobs are routine for us. We originate a brand-new key and program it to your car's immobilizer on-site, even when there's no working key to copy. This service starts at $249.

Do you program push-to-start and smart keys?

We do. Proximity smart keys and push-to-start systems are a big part of our work, and we program them right at your location instead of a two-day dealer wait.

How long does it take?

Most car key jobs are done on-site in 30 to 60 minutes, and we can usually get to you the same day anywhere in Erie or Niagara County.

Do you work on European cars like Mercedes, BMW, and Audi?

Yes — European and high-end vehicle keys are one of our specialties, including the immobilizer systems most locksmiths avoid.

Is the VIN tool's key estimate exact?

It's a close estimate based on your year and make. The federal database doesn't store key data, so we always confirm the exact key, chip, and price by VIN before we start.
