Ask most homeowners to point at the weakest entry on their property and they will point at the front door. It is almost never the front door. Then there is the part people genuinely do not think about: the garage is usually connected to the house. The interior door from the garage into the kitchen or mudroom is very often a hollow-core interior door with a privacy knob, because the builder treated it as an inside door. Once someone is in the garage with the overhead door down, they are working in complete privacy on a door that was never designed to stop anybody.
And the garage frequently holds the keys to everything else — a spare house key on a hook, a car key in a coat, the fob for the second vehicle.
Fixing the Service Door Properly
The good news is that this is a cheap problem to solve, and you do not need to replace the door.
Add a real deadbolt. A knob lock is a latch, not a lock — the bolt is short, spring-loaded, and can be pushed back. A grade 2 or grade 1 deadbolt with a full one-inch throw is the single biggest upgrade you can make to a garage service door, and it takes us well under an hour.
Fix the strike, not just the lock. This is the part nearly everyone skips. Most doors fail at the frame, not the lock — the strike plate is held by two half-inch screws into soft trim. Swap in a reinforced strike with three-inch screws that reach the structural stud behind the jamb, and the same door suddenly resists a kick that would have opened it before.
Consider a keypad. The reason garage service doors sit unlocked is friction: you are carrying the trash, the mower, a bag of salt. A keypad deadbolt removes the excuse entirely — no key to dig out, no hidden key under the mat, and you can give the lawn service a code instead of a key and change it afterward. The Overhead Door and the Emergency Release
The big overhead door has its own weaknesses worth knowing about.
Older openers with a single fixed code can be captured and replayed. Anything made in roughly the last fifteen years uses rolling code, which changes with every press and closes that hole — if your opener predates that, replacing it is a genuine security upgrade and not just a convenience.
The emergency release cord is the other one. Every overhead door has a red pull that disconnects the door from the opener so you can lift it by hand in a power cut. On some installations that cord can be reached from outside by fishing a wire through the gap at the top of the door. A release-cord shield, or simply shortening the cord so it cannot be hooked, closes it.
If you have a detached garage or the overhead door is the only entry, a slide bolt or padlock hasp on the inside of the track is worth having for periods when you are away — the same principle as our gate and fence lock work.
Do Not Forget the Door Into the House
Upgrade the interior garage-to-house door and you have added a second real barrier. Treat it like an exterior door: a solid-core slab if you are replacing it, a proper deadbolt, and a reinforced strike. If your building code requires a fire-rated door there (it usually does for an attached garage), keep it fire-rated — a locksmith who knows commercial hardware will get this right rather than hanging whatever is cheapest.

A keypad is genuinely well suited to a garage because it solves the actual problem, which is that your hands are always full and the key is always inside. My garage is detached. Does any of this change?
