Gate and Fence Locks in Buffalo, NY: Securing the Perimeter Without Making Life Harder
A gate is the one lock people buy purely on price, hang in ten minutes, and then fight with for the next five years. It rusts, it sags, the padlock seizes in January, and eventually somebody props the gate open with a brick because it is easier than dealing with it. At that point you have a fence with a decorative gate in it.
Gates are genuinely harder than doors. They live outside in the full weather, they move in the wind, the posts shift with frost, and they are often the only thing between a stranger and your back yard, your pool, your tools or your dumpster. Here is how to get one right.
Why Gate Hardware Fails Around Here
The post moves. Western New York frost heave lifts and drops fence posts every year. A latch that lined up perfectly in October will not meet its catch in April. Most “broken” gate latches are simply out of alignment, and they need the hardware adjusted or the post reset, not replaced.
The gate sags. Wooden gates especially. Gravity plus a hundred pounds of gate on two hinges pulls the latch side down until nothing lines up. An anti-sag cable or a proper diagonal brace fixes the cause; adjusting the latch only chases the symptom.
The wrong metal. A plain steel padlock on a garden gate is a rusted-shut padlock by the second winter. Salt spray near the lake makes this worse. Weather-rated hardware, stainless or properly coated, costs a little more once instead of a little every year.
Nobody ever lubricated it. And when they did, they used oil, which collects grit and freezes. Same rule as any exterior lock: dry graphite or PTFE.
Choosing the Right Lock for the Gate
Padlock and hasp. Simple, cheap, and fine — if you use a closed-shackle or disc padlock rather than an open-shackle one, and if the hasp is bolted through with carriage bolts rather than fixed with wood screws that can be backed out. The hasp is usually the weak point, not the lock. Same reasoning as our storage unit lock guidance.
Keyed gate latch. A proper gate lock with a key cylinder on both sides. Better than a padlock for a gate you use daily, because there is nothing to unhook and lose. We can key it to your house key so you carry one key.
Surface bolt or slide bolt. Cheap, strong, and the right answer for the second leaf of a double gate or for a gate you rarely open. Combine with a padlock for security.
Keypad gate lock. Worth serious consideration for a shared or commercial gate. No key to distribute, no key to lose, and you change the code when someone leaves instead of rekeying. This is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade on a gate used by more than one household or a crew.
Electric gate release. For a commercial yard or a multi-tenant property, an electric strike or magnetic lock tied into access control gives you logged entries and instant revocation. This is standard on managed properties and increasingly common on shared residential courtyards.
The Pool Gate Is Not Optional
This one is not a preference, it is law. New York State requires residential swimming pools to be enclosed by a barrier with self-closing and self-latching gates, with the latch positioned so a small child cannot reach it, and the gate must open outward away from the pool.
That means a padlock and a chain is not compliance — a padlock is only locked if somebody remembers to lock it, and the code is written around a gate that secures itself every single time. If you have a pool, the gate needs a proper self-closing hinge and a self-latching mechanism at the required height, in working order.

Commercial Yards, Dumpsters and Shared Gates
For businesses the calculus changes. A yard gate, a dumpster enclosure or a delivery gate typically needs to be opened by several people who do not all work for you — staff, waste haulers, contractors, deliveries.
The two workable answers are a keyed-alike system where everyone who needs access holds the same controlled key, or a keypad where everyone gets a code. Both are far better than the common alternative, which is a padlock whose key has been copied so many times that nobody knows who holds one.
