The good news is that this is one of the quickest, least expensive jobs a locksmith does. Most office furniture locks are small wafer cam locks, and a locksmith with the right tools opens them in minutes without damaging the cabinet.
What Is Actually in Your Filing Cabinet Lock
Office furniture uses a cam lock: a small cylinder with a flat metal arm on the back that rotates to catch a bar or a strike. On a filing cabinet, that cam usually drives a vertical locking bar that engages all the drawers at once, which is why one lock secures a four-drawer file.
These are wafer locks, not pin tumbler locks, and they are built to a price. The important consequence for you is that office furniture locks are low-security by design. They stop casual browsing by a colleague or a visitor. They do not stop a determined attack, and they were never intended to. That matters for what you store in them, which we come back to below.
Most cam locks have a code stamped on the cylinder face or on the original key — a short combination of letters and numbers. If you can read that code, cutting a replacement key is trivial and fast. It is the first thing to look for before assuming the worst.
Your Options When the Key Is Gone
Read the code and cut a key. Fastest and cheapest. If the code is visible on the lock face, we cut a key to it and you are done. No damage, no replacement parts.
Open it and decode the lock. If there is no visible code, we open the lock non-destructively and read the wafers to determine the cut, then cut a key to match. The cabinet keeps its original hardware.
Replace the cylinder. Cam locks are standardised by diameter and length, so swapping one is a five-minute job with a new lock and two new keys. This is often the sensible choice on a worn lock even when we could make a key, because a tired wafer lock will keep giving trouble.
Key everything alike. This is the upgrade worth asking about. If your office has eleven cabinets and eleven different keys, we can replace the cylinders so one key runs the lot — or set up a proper hierarchy where each department holds its own key and management holds a master. That is the same principle as a master key system, just applied to furniture.
What we will not do is drill a cabinet that could be opened cleanly, and we do not encourage the pry-bar approach some people try first — a bent drawer front costs far more than the lock.
The Records Question Nobody Asks Until It Matters
Here is where this stops being a convenience issue. A lot of what sits in office filing cabinets is exactly the material that carries legal obligations: personnel files, medical information, client records, payroll, tax documents.
New York’s data security requirements expect reasonable safeguards for private information, and “it was in a locked cabinet” only helps if the cabinet was genuinely secured and access was controlled. A furniture cam lock that half the office has a key to, or that has been unlocked since 2019 because nobody could find the key, is not an access control system.
